Understanding BS EN 1729
BS EN 1729 is the European standard that governs the sizing, safety, and durability of chairs and tables used in educational settings. It was developed to ensure that furniture in schools is appropriately proportioned for the children and young people who use it every day.
The standard is divided into two parts. Part 1 covers functional dimensions — the specific measurements and size markings that determine how a chair or table should be proportioned for each size category. Part 2 addresses safety requirements and testing methods, setting out the strength and stability criteria that furniture must meet before it can be classified as compliant.
The Importance of Correct Sizing
Furniture that is too large or too small for a pupil can lead to poor posture, discomfort, and difficulty concentrating. Over time, consistently using incorrectly sized furniture may contribute to musculoskeletal problems, particularly in the back, neck, and shoulders.
The EN 1729 standard draws on anthropometric research — data collected from measuring the body dimensions of children and young people across Europe — to define the ideal seat height, table height, and other key dimensions for each size category. Selecting the Right Size
The most reliable way to determine the correct furniture size is to measure the popliteal height — the distance from the floor to the underside of the thigh just behind the knee when the pupil is seated with feet flat on the ground. This measurement corresponds directly to the seat height categories in the EN 1729 standard.
As a general guide, the age ranges shown in the chart above provide a useful starting point. However, because children grow at different rates, we always recommend checking against actual measurements where possible — particularly for pupils who are notably taller or shorter than average for their age.
